Greetings everyone....happy February! I am happy that the days are slowing getting longer, even if our recent snowfall and winter temperatures are a reminder that spring won't be here for some time to come. That's fine with me, as I am excited to have the new Rebecca Solnit book, The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness, on its way to me, arriving tomorrow sometime. I am certainly reading widely and intensely for classes, but I needed a creative shot in the arm and there is nothing like Rebecca Solnit to make your mind ponder and let your thoughts wander, as she weaves together what seem disparate threads into a beautiful whole.
There was a review from the Utne Reader back in September that you can read here. If you are not familiar with Rebecca Solnit, well I hope you will love her writing as much as I do. I especially loved The Faraway Nearby....just beautiful. Any great reading you'd like to recommend....I'm always open!

i read to students from her Field Guide to Getting Lost as well as the Faraway Nearby but also love dipping into her map books.
ReplyDeleteHi India....I absolutely loved Faraway Nearby, but she is such a great writer, there are gems scattered in all her work. So glad you are reading to students...that's delightful! I haven't read the map books, but must do that, as I am a map lover. I think he Field Guide to Getting Lost is a perfect book for artists! Cheers and thanks for writing in!

You have been busy and I understand that the study creative mix is often not a good one. No wonder you are not juggling all balls at present. I have been much the same for different reasons. late last year I bought two of Rebecca Solnit's books - A Field Guide to Getting Lost and the Faraway Nearby. I haven't read either as yet but your post has prompted me ... :-)

ReplyDeleteSharmon....you will love Rebecca Solnit, I hope. As I've mentioned to others that have commented, my favorite of her books is The Faraway Nearby, but this new one is quite fine too. This book is a collection of essays, so I am dipping in here and there and savoring them. Thanks for commenting....good to hear from you!
