And Now, For Something Completely Different--Tiny Scrolls!

Tiny Scrolls! I've made a huge leap...off the wall, out the two-dimensional flatland I'm so familiar with, into three-dimensional space!  I've wanted make objects, and for the most part, I feel as if much of my previous work is object-like, but I still have had a desire to make something that had dimension, as well as surface and texture.  I saw these tiny scrolls in my sleep several nights ago and here is the first one, out in the world...The Scroll For Random Phrases.  So much fun to make and now the ideas for these scrolls are spilling over.  This is made with Japanese paper, pieced together with used, dried teabags and gel medium.  There are all manner of random phrases inside the scroll held by bits of teabag and the miracle of acrylic gel medium!  If you are familiar with my daily found text poem blog, MissouriBendPaperWorks, you'll know I have a million bits of found text phrases at my finger tips, so that became the subject of the first scroll.  It was also kind of a test to see if my dream was just a fantasy or not.  There are three more tiny scrolls in the works, all in various stages of completion, on one of my work tables.  Not enough hours in the day, that's all I can say! Hope you like them!

  1. Patti, this is great! Isn't it wonderful when we see something in a dream or in our mind's eye and it materializes before us just as we hoped? I love the physicaity of this scroll, and that it exists in different states, closed and opened - giving it a life of its own and a chance for the lucky person who acquires one to interact directly with their artwork, and get to literally release its secret, not just admire it from afar. But I love how it looks either way! The colors are so natural, simple and warm - yet have something ancient and important to them, like old parchment documents or those Asian painted scrolls that covered whole walls in palaces - in miniature! You are heading in a great new direction! Inspiring to witness...thanks for letting us watch!

  2. So good to hear your response! It's quite a different thing for me to make something like this obviously, but it feels like a natural extension of what I've been doing. Thank goodness I have stacks and stacks of teabags...I drink loose tea mostly now, but started saving teabags several years ago...not quite knowing how I would use them. I love the way they do impart a feeling of age and history. Great to hear from you...thanks!

  7. The scroll for random phrases .... I like that. Isn't it exciting when new ideas blossom and the days seem too short to develop all of them. Looking forward to seeing more.
