My husband has had this little book, Affirmations For Artists by Eric Maisel, for a number of years and often chooses quotes from it to put on the outside of the door to the Printmaking studio up at the university. These three thoughts I found in different sections caught my eye this evening. I think I will go to sleep now with these little gems tucked quietly under my pillow.
"Where is your Self to be found? Always in the deepest enchantment that you have experienced." -- Hugo Von Hofmannsthal
"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a passing shape, from a spider's web." -- Pablo Picasso
"Fascination is a key to productivity; it unites experiences; it is even its own reward." -- Erving Polster

Great quotes, P! I have been thinking a lot lately about moments of enchantment or fascination when I have felt very much like a receptacle, so all three of these quotes resonate with me! I like the idea that this is the key to who you are. When I have had hard times in the past and felt a little stalled or off track, as if I were not living my own life as who I really was, I have tried to remember moments I've been expansively and thrillingly happy and felt most alive and myself, what I was doing, where I was at those times - and basically do what it took to GET MORE OF THAT. Not the most traditional method of self-rescue, but it worked! Thanks for these timely and timeless quotes!
ReplyDeleteI am ordering a copy of this book ASAP! I love your blog Patti. It is so inspirational and has a gentleness to it that soothes the soul. Have a great weekend!

Gabriella....your self-rescue method sounds like a brilliant plan. I think the older we get, we know more about where we find enchantment...maybe the real triumph is to know that place or those places of enchantment hold the secret of our heart of hearts. So glad these quotes resonate with you!
ReplyDeleteCarol...well, that's a woman of action! Good for you for ordering the book...I think it's a good one to keep on hand, but have to admit that I hadn't really spent much time with it until the other night! Thank you for your kind words about the blog...your comment means so much! Cheers and enjoy the weekend!
